Crafted from 2.2-ton nặng gõ bông lau wood, with a width of 2.15m and length of 4m, this unique ván ngựa set in An Giang has been offered more than 3 billion VND.
The owner of this one-of-a-kind 3-billion-VND ván ngựa set is Mr. Nguyễn Thanh Hải, from Mỹ Phó Hamlet, Mỹ Đức Commune, Châu Phú District (An Giang). As a timber trader, after many successful business ventures, Mr. Hải decided to switch to the tourism and eco-tourism service sector. Currently, he is the director of a private tourism area in Châu Phú District, An Giang.
The traditional house was built by him to worship his ancestors. Almost all the furniture inside the house is made of wood, featuring many unique one-of-a-kind pieces, with an estimated total value of 45 billion VND, including the ván ngựa set that has been priced up to 3 billion VND.
To acquire this set, its owner spent nearly 3 years searching. The 2.2-ton ván ngựa set made from gõ bông lau wood was found in the Vietnam–Laos border region. The owner of the Western region tourism area shared that when he first saw the wood slab, he was so amazed that he couldn’t even speak. When the seller quoted the price, he didn’t bargain at all and paid immediately. “At that time, there were 3 equally sized pre-cut gõ bông lau slabs in the warehouse. I asked to buy 2, but the owner refused to sell. In the end, they took pity on me for traveling so far, so they agreed to split and sell me one piece,” Mr. Hải recalled. After bringing it home, he used that very piece of wood to create the most unique ván ngựa set in the Mekong Delta today.
This ván ngựa set has become one of the main attractions drawing visitors to his private tourism area. According to wood connoisseurs, the gõ bông lau tree is estimated to be over 500 years old. In addition, lying on this set gives a cooling sensation to the back and is said to help relieve aches, fatigue, and common colds.
