The Western provinces, also known as the Mekong Delta or the Southwestern region, are commonly referred to by people in Southern Vietnam simply as the “Mekong Delta,” consisting of 12 provinces and 1 centrally governed city.

This region is part of the Mekong River Delta, covering an area of 39,734 km². It borders the Southeast region, Cambodia to the north, the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the East Sea (South China Sea) to the southeast.
