Like many other areas in the new land of Southern Vietnam, in the past, sedge grew wild in abundance in T\u00e2n Ph\u01b0\u1edbc. When dried, the sedge stems are very strong and durable, so the local people used the dried sedge stems to weave various items such as: handbags, sleeping mats, hats\u2026 However, the economic efficiency was not high.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn 2004, the project \u201cSustainable exploitation of sedge fields combined with preserving local handicrafts\u201d was implemented, which not only contributed to directly and indirectly creating jobs for thousands of poor laborers, most of whom are Khmer ethnic people, but also maintained an abundant food source and a friendly, ideal living environment for the migratory Red-crowned Cranes.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" class=\"wp-image-1161\" src=\"https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/lang-nghe-dan-bang-phu-my-kien-giang-3.webp\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/lang-nghe-dan-bang-phu-my-kien-giang-3.webp 900w, https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/lang-nghe-dan-bang-phu-my-kien-giang-3-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/lang-nghe-dan-bang-phu-my-kien-giang-3-768x576.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ph\u00fa M\u1ef9 sedge weaving village<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weaving work requires dexterity<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nToday, this type of sedge has been cultivated as a specialized crop, harvested after one year. After being brought home, the sedge is sorted into bundles according to different lengths. Such bundles are called \u201cneo\u201d.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAfter being sun-dried for two full days, the sedge stems must also be pressed through a machine to make them evenly thin and completely dry.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe weaving work is not difficult but requires the artisans&#8217; dexterity to produce products that are both sturdy and beautiful. The <a href=\"https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/en\/traditional-craft-villages\/lang-nghe-nan-noi-dat\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/vanhoamientay.com\/lang-nghe\/lang-nghe-nan-noi-dat\">craft village<\/a> of sedge weaving in Ph\u00fa M\u1ef9, Ki\u00ean Giang supplies a large quantity of sedge-woven products to the domestic market as well as for export every year.
